Kangemi

When you visit a posh neighbourhood in Nairobi, you will surely find a slum next to it. Kangemi is one of them, in the middle of Mountain View estate with Loresho right across the road. The southern side of Kangemi connects Kawangware which is another slum in Nairobi. Mountain View

This is a gated community that has family homes; nice spacious compounds for the kids to play at, tarmacked roads leading to the estate, and a serene environment surrounded by many trees. Mountain View is approximately 10 kms away from the city centre which means houses are more pricey. A 2 bedroom apartment ranges between Kshs 26,000 and Kshs 50,000. There are some people who don’t mind renting our their servant’s quarter at Kshs 10,000 per month.

The beauty of staying here is that the surrounding area is buzzing with activity. If you want to buy fruits and vegetables, easily walk to Kangemi market. There is also Mountain View Mall that offers banking services, restaurants, retail stores all which caters to residents in the surrounding area.

Uthiru

The closer you are to the CBD, the higher the amount of rent you will pay. Uthiru is no exception. Depending on your budget, the price of a one-bedroom apartment is Kshs 10,000 and Kshs 17,000. If you want a bedsitter, you will find one that’s Kshs 10,000. 2 bedrooms here are also a bit expensive due to the proximity to town. You could get one for Kshs 23,000 or one for Kshs 50,000. Uthiru also has public institutions such as the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and Kabete Polytechnic Training College.

87/Kinoo

Developers are making it possible for you to live in a house which looks just like the ones found in the leafy suburbs. The price of a bedsitter is between Kshs 8,000 and Kshs 18,000. One bedroom is between Kshs 10,000 and Kshs 20,000 and 2 bedroom apartment in Kinoo ranges between Kshs 20,000 and Kshs 32,000. All these prices are dependent on the available amenities and proximity to the main highway.

Muthiga

If you are a party goer and you enjoy spending time with your friends over some nyama choma and drinks, Muthiga should be at the top of your list. It’s known as an entertainment hub at night with themed nights and live bands.

Community

Where to Eat

Waiyaki Way is an area that never sleeps: no matter the time of day, there is human traffic on both sides of the road, businesses open until late into the night, mama mboga selling food, a butchery with cooked or raw meat.

If you don’t have the enery to prepare a meal, you can order food from Big Square, KFC, Chicken Inn and other restaurants.

If you get home late, you don’t have to worry about cooking. There are people who sell fruits, mutura, meatballs, chapatis, mandazi all by the roadside or at a restaurant.

If you love pork, you should check out Pork Center in Uthiru. They serve one of the tastiest pork in the city. This place is constantly full which means they serve fresh meat. Order pork choma, pork chops, wet fry, steak all served with a side of chips or ugali and kachumbari.

Transport

Moving around the city is getting bearable from all the road construction expansions which are easing the traffic congestion. The transformation is happening on major highways and Waiyaki Way is no exception. If you haven’t been there in a while, you will definitely get shocked by how different it looks. Waiyaki Way is being expanded hence they have cut the trees on the highway. Numerous diversions on the road. It’s easy to get lost if you are not familiar with the road.
